Wisdom of Trees
By: Estrella 13
The visible regeneration of trees through the seasons is a reminder of life¹s constant state of transition. The bright buds of new growth exposed on bare branches is a sure sign of winter turning to spring, the change bringing a sense of rebirth to us all. Later in the year, bounties of rich, warm-colored leaves distinctly welcome the crisp, cooler days of autumn. Withering leaves then brown and fall, dropping the bounty to the earth to be regenerated through the soil, effectively depositing nourishment back into the roots for future growth.
Trees absorb nutrients from dirt and find vitality from this in whatever ways possible. With the added benefits of a thriving ecosystem of birds and insects living in and around them, trees grow fuller and can survive myriad disasters, some living for centuries. Trees exist with others or alone, pushing and peeking out of a cement crack or reaching out to its bark-covered neighbors with spreading branches atop a grassy hill. When you look at a tree, you may see something regal in it's structure. While the entire form may be the first aspect you notice, take note of the details. Each noble characteristic has been earned over time while living in accord with its surroundings.
Trees can be found anywhere a seed can take purchase and be given enough water and light to grow. Trees adapt to their surroundings and will infinitely distort themselves to find a better source of light or water. If soil is shallow, so shall be the roots of a tree. In a case where soil is lacking, would a tree with 'tall' in its genetics still attempt to attain great heights with it's branches? Rather, a tree will build it's structure to provide a well-balanced dependence on each of it's earthbound sections, offering strength to the overall being. Long, stretching branches may replace tall limbs, balanced by roots spreading wide instead of down.
We have much to learn.
As humans, our most important interaction with trees is invisible. In addition to the many products harvested trees supply for our everyday living, the overall health of our species is dependent on a living-tree by-product oxygen. All soil-based plants breathe. Each exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide differently depending on whether it is day or night. During the day, trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide in order to carry on photosynthesis, emitting oxygen in the process. This gaseous exchange represents a chemical balance from which we, as humans, we can only benefit, since it is the full-time duty of our lungs to absorb oxygen.
In exhalation, our lungs emit carbon dioxide, thereby feeding plants in this glorious sun-based cycle. At night plants renew their supply of oxygen by emitting carbon dioxide while absorbing oxygen. Plants¹ absorption rates of oxygen are extremely slow as compared with humans. During the sun-soaking activity of photosynthesis, larger volumes of gas are exchanged, with trees and plants releasing increased amounts of oxygen during daylight hours. While this exchange is fascinating, the key to this message is that our human systems do not have the same switching capability to make the most of available environs. Our systems need oxygen all the time!
Therefore, our dependency on nature cannot be overlooked. Trees have supported humanity in the form of shelter and fire as far back as man has walked the earth. We are in danger of losing these and millions of other benefits that trees have provided for millennia, if care is not taken to protect the canopy of the ancient forests of our time and to create new forests where populations grow. We must plant trees to nurture the souls living here in health as well as spirit. Our dependency on trees and plants is apparent as is the need for abundant green spaces located where people live and breathe.
Check with your local municipal government to see if your city supports a re-leafing program or if they offer any support to build the tree canopy around your area. Every tree makes a difference in huge ways as does every person. Don¹t underestimate your impact. Plant a tree today and open your heart for the future of the world.
