Go Grow Your Own Garden
by: Jennifer Hurley
Ever wonder what is in today's fruits and vegetables? We buy them at the grocery store packaged and processed. They are hybrids tampered with by mankind and our little gadgets in greenhouses. It is curious that they move this food to markets in mass quantity
We buy these items forcing the demand to grow, thus helping create the cycle which we have today, the all encompassing money exchange. As Americans, we don't barter much anymore; we merely pass our little pieces of paper and coins for the next purchase. Not that this is a bad thing, but what if mankind took an ever-present step back and looked at society today compared to even 100 years ago?
What are the changes? One is the amount of personal farms, especially in cities. We've grown in numbers that lead us into condos and one-bedroom apartments. We are in places that don't allow enough space to grow our own food. While we should worry about our reliance on external sources to feed us, we expect our meals to be ready in an instant, complaining when the lines are too long or the man in front of us writes a check.
Where has our independent health gone? As for those little morsels of mock nutrition we feel so good about eating after we buy them from the local food stores, well… we could be making those ourselves at a fraction of the cost. We have to rise up as a society to meet our own needs and demands or eventually there may not be those people to bring in our squash and carrots to local stores.
We have been given the supplies and means to create our own food sources by nature. We are able to hoe the land and water our crops. We choose to live in places that sequester us and force us into the mercy of an unknown food lord, one who is not infallible.
We can determine even in recent news that sometimes the plight of a food lord relies on the almighty dollar. Hence the tomato scare of 2008, or the spinach scare of 2007 when people became ill from bad fertilizing, thus inviting e-coli into our systems. There is chemical ripening for quicker processing where fruit is sprayed or even injected with artificial hormones in an attempt to fool us.
Who is to say if we can yank ourselves away from the convenience cow's teat?
If we could find a little patience within our daily lives, we could compensate our economy and reap the pleasures of the earth. It doesn't have to be a big garden, just a small flat in an effort to overcome some of the otherwise store bought phenomena. Go grow your own garden and relieve some stress financially and who knows, maybe working with the soil will help ground and calm us as a nation.
